The rest of us didn't see this one coming—especially not this soon. But what about Sandra Bullock?

Did Jesse James' ex have fair warning that he was going to announce his engagement to soulmate du jour Kat Von D yesterday, or was she once again blindsided by the motorcycle man?

Well, surprise! And credit where it's unexpectedly due: Having learned his lesson about full disclosure the first time around, James apparently knew well enough to inform Bullock of his plans to remarry prior to telling the rest of the world.

So the answer is yes, you can teach old dogs new tricks. At least, Kat better hope so.

However, the disclosure was just as friendly as you'd imagine (meaning, not at all), as a source told E! News that Bullock and James are not on speaking terms, but that she was nonetheless notified of his nuptial news prior to the announcement.

Not that she had a whole lot of lead time on his bombshell: The source told E! News that she was informed only "within hours" of his statement.

Which isn't to say that the proposal was spur of the moment—quite the opposite, in fact, as a rep for jeweler Neil Lane told E! News that James purchased the engagement sparkler about a month ago. It's a one-of-a-kind sparkler and Jesse personally picked it out.

"It's a beautiful ring with a center diamond in the middle surrounded by smaller diamonds in a fancy shape. It has delicate filigree patterns with very pretty scroll work and it came from the Neil Lane archival collection," the rep said.

Sounds great. What could possibly go wrong?
