Are Cher and her 52-year-old screenwriter boyfriend Ron Zimmerman dunzo?

Before you add this couple to the growing list of recent Hollywood breakups, Zimmerman tells us…

He was never exactly Cher's "boyfriend" in the first place.

As we first told you back in Sept., the two first met through Facebook while Cher was in Vegas for her longstanding show at Caesar's Palace.

"We're best friends and we love each other," Zimmerman says. "We don't conform to any traditional relationship stuff."

Hmm...does that mean Cher's may have nabbed herself a friend with benefits?

Cher's rep did not immediately comment.
