Burke, the singer whose version of "Cry to Me" played scratchily during the love scene in Dirty Dancing, died Sunday in Amsterdam, his website said. He was 70.
"He was on his way to spread his message of love as he loved to do," Burke's family said in a statement.
Burke reportedly suffered a heart attack en route to Amsterdam from his Los Angeles home. He was set to play a sold-out concert Tuesday in the Netherlands.
A 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and 2002 Grammy winner, Burke made his legacy with a string of classic 1960s cuts, including "Cry to Me," and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," which was covered by the Blues Brothers, and featured in the 1980 John Belushi-Dan Ayrkroyd film.
To say Burke was a family man is understatement. Per his website, he was father to 21, grandfather to 90 and great-grandfather to 19.
