James Franco looked as smokin' as ever on the carpet at the LACMA Resnick Pavilion Opening Gala Saturday night, but he sort of pulled a Joaquin Phoenix with reporters.

After a few simple questions about the event and his recent Eat Pray Love press tour, the outspoken star babbled something about Ireland, looked off in the distance and then wandered away before finishing his sentence.

While we blame Joaquin for setting a precedent for weirdo press behavior, we still have to ask: What was up?

As out of it as Franco seemed on the carpet, inside the gala he was the life of the party, showing off those gorgeous pearly whites and hanging with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson before sitting down for dinner.

Guess if you don't feel like doing the press line just act like you're way too stoned to understand the questions!

Inside the event all eyes were on another guy, socialite Brandon Davis, who was supposedly dead.

Although the socialite is best known for his fire crotch cracks at Lindsay Lohan, Brandon found himself in the press Saturday when TMZ and Perez Hilton you know, reported he died outside of Las Vegas in a gas station explosion.

Unfortunately there was a "Brandon Davis" who did die in said fire, but some outlets didn't exactly check with his rep first before pubbing his obituary.

Chit-chat-wise, Davis hung with date Nicky Hilton and her parents Kathy and Rick (Paris was "staying in") and was overheard calling Perez & Co. "idiots" for the false reports.

During dinner Christina Aguilera gave a four-song performance, including "Fighter" and "You Lost Me." Bestie Nicole Richie wore Marchesa and cheered from the audience and hubby Jordan Bratman stood up to watch his wife near the front of the stage.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner, also in attendance, skipped out with desserts untouched before Christina hit the stage because they had an early morning of work ahead of them.

Meanwhile, one of the best dressed of the gala was Olivia Wilde. The House star apparently was so nervous that her dress was too "over the top" that she wasn't sure if she wanted to go…but we can tell you first hand her Monique Lhuillier gown was a total hit.

Other celebs masquerading at the gala: Marisa Tomei, Teri Hatcher, Chris Hemsworth, Molly Sims, and Joan Collins.
