Mel Gibson Unhurt After Wrecking Maserati

Embattled thesp walks away from motoring mishap in Malibu; "DUI is not suspected in the accident," says CHP report

Mad Max this wasn't.

Just a few days after returning home from a Fiji fishing vacation with his sons, Mel Gibson crashed his Italian sports car into a Mailbu hillside.

And unlike Mel's 2006 drunken-driving conviction (later expunged from his record), the CHP report says, "DUI is not suspected in the accident."

(Maybe Mel's just distracted by the deposition he's due to give in his no-holds-barred custody battle with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva and the separate domestic violence probe set to wrap up any day now.)

So what did happen to Mel and his 2008 Maserati? According to California Highway Patrol, the erstwhile Lethal Weapon star was cruising around the seaside community Sunday night when he lost control of the blue sports car and rammed into a rocky hillside on Malibu Canyon Road.

"For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside," read the police report. "He stopped his car at the scene and was contacted by officers from the West Valley CHP Area."

Gibson wasn't injured in the accident. According to the cops, he "supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement, and received a ride home from a friend."

The Quattroporte was towed from the scene.

Meanwhile, Gibson was also not cited for the incident, with CHP Officer Mike Harris telling E! News that it isn't the usual practice to issue citations for collisions in which the only casualty is property.

"In this situation, no citation was issued and no charges are being filed," Harris said. "It was just an accident. "

"His property was the only property that was damaged," Harris added. "I don't know if he did any damage to the rocks, but I'm pretty sure they are stable."
