Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth was taken by surprise when Miley Cyrus was the first one to go in for a kiss.

Hollywood's newest hunky Aussie import admits he had no idea that Cyrus was gonna go for it. And it wasn't exactly the most romantic moment...

Cyrus was only acting. As was Hemsworth.

You see, they first locked lips on the first day of filming their new movie, The Last Song (in theaters March 31), after director Julie Anne Robinson secretly told Ms. Miley to do so when they were shooting on a beach.

"It wasn't in the script," Hemsworth tells me. "I read the script and it just said, 'frolicking on the beach.' So [Robinson] was yelling things like, 'Splash here! Push her over! Jump on his back!'

"But then she yelled, 'Kiss him!'?" Hemsworth continues. "It was good because you can get nervous with the first kiss. But there was no time to get nervous. And it's not like you can stop and say, 'No!'?"

As we all know by now, Cyrus and Hemsworth eventually started dating off-camera, too. But Hemsworth is no John Mayer. "There's no denying it anymore, because there are photos everywhere," Hemsworth says. "But it is our private life, and I don't really feel the need to talk about it."

And to think, Hemsworth got the job sort of by chance. He was on the Disney lot one day for a meeting with the casting department. When he lost his way, he happened to ask Robinson for directions. "From that first moment, I knew he was a movie star," Robinson says.

She insists she was unaware when Cyrus and Hemsworth became more than just costars. "I could see the chemistry when I was watching the dailies, let's put it that way," Robinson says. "But I didn't know much about what was going on in their private lives...But yeah, I could see the chemistry from the very first day of shooting."

That's not all I have for you about The Last Song. Make sure to keep coming back here for more.
