Watch: Ed Sheeran Says His Personal Life Has Been "Turbulent"

Ed Sheeran is thinking out loud about his lack of social media activity.

After being relatively quiet on Instagram, the singer, 31, returned to the platform to have an honest conversation with his followers about his absence.

"Hey guys," he began in the Jan. 31 post. "So I realize I haven't been that engaged in my social media or my fanbase online over the past couple of years, and the things that have been posted on this account might have got a bit boring. I'm sorry. It's my fault."

As for why he's been mostly silent on these channels, Sheeran suggested he's been dealing with some things privately.

"The reason I'm making this video is, just being totally honest, I've had some turbulent things been happening in my personal life," he continued. "So I just didn't really feel like being online and pretending to be something I'm not when I wasn't feeling like that. And I know that sounds weird, but hence I'm making this video to say things are looking up and I'm back online."

The four-time Grammy winner—who is going on tour this year—hinted fans should now keep their eyes peeled, noting "weird s--t is going to start being posted here."

"I made this video like 50 f--king times," Sheeran concluded. "I'm not making another one."

The "Photograph" artist didn't provide any further details on what he's been going through. But to be fair, he hasn't been completely M.I.A. from social media. Before this video, Sheeran had posted twice in January—both times about his performances. However, the last time before that was Nov. 4, noting he was "signing off until 2023" and telling his fans he will "see you in the new year. Much love, Ed x."

Sheeran has also taken breaks from social media before and admitted to disconnecting from his phone.

"I don't carry a phone. No, I haven't had a phone since 2015," he said on a January 2022 episode of Hodinkee Radio's podcast The Collector's Edition With Ben Clymer. "I got really, really overwhelmed and sad with a phone and just spent my whole time just in a very low place. And I got rid of it, and it was like a veil just lifted."

And his fans just want him to do what's best for him.

"You don't owe us anything and please don't feel like you have to post if you don't want to," one commenter wrote underneath his post. "We'll all still be here regardless of whether you have a social media presence or not."

Added another, "Nobody wants you to pretend something you're not over here, no worries. Just post when you're feeling like it."
