In the words of 2 Chainz, "I'm different."
Those lyrics come to mind when reading Mark Ruffalo's latest response to criticism of the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Hulk star defended Marvel's numerous projects, which have been derided by directors Martin Scorcese and Francis Ford Coppola, telling Metro U.K. he isn't concerned the number of Marvel shows and movies impact the quality. As he said, "It's not something I worry about."
"I understand that these things run their course and then something else comes along," Ruffalo, who appears in the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk, explained. "But the thing Marvel has done well is that, inside the MCU, just as they do with comic books, they let a director or an actor sort of recreate each piece to their own style, their likeness. Marvel generally lets them bring that to the material."
In comparison, Ruffalo said, "If you watch a Star Wars [project], you're pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time." Okurrr!
While Ruffalo threw a bit of shade at the franchise, he conceded the various Star Wars spin-offs "might have a little bit of humor" or "a little bit of different animation." Otherwise, "you're always, really, in that same kind of world," he said. "But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling, even within the Marvel Universe."
Ruffalo isn't the only one to come to Marvel's defense as of late. Numerous actors who have participated in the films and shows have spoken out about the people working behind the scenes, with Elizabeth Olsen recently discussing why this criticism bothers her. "I'm not saying we're making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me," the WandaVision star told The Independent in May. "These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators—I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films that also work on these projects."
She continued, "From an actor's point of view, whatever, I get it; I totally understand that there's a different kind of performance that's happening. But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people. That's where I get a little feisty about that."
With Ruffalo's latest comments, it's safe to say she's not the only one getting feisty.
