Christopher Plummer, The Sound of Music and Beginners Star, Dead at 91

Christopher Plummer, the Oscar-winning actor from films including A Beautiful Mind and All the Money in the World, has died. The actor passed away at his home with his wife by his side.

Christopher Plummer—the iconic actor famous for his performances in The Sound of MusicBeginnersA Beautiful Mind and many other films—has died. 

The Oscar-winning star passed away in the early morning of Friday, Feb. 5 at his home in Connecticut with his wife of more than 50 years, Elaine Taylor, by his side, E! News can confirm. Plummer was 91 years old. 

"Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words," Lou Pitt, his longtime manager and friend, said in a statement. "He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come."

Further details surrounding his death have not been disclosed at this time. 

The Toronto-born actor got his start in Hollywood on television in the 1950s. He then proceeded to make his silver screen debut in the 1958 Sidney Lumet-directed drama Stage Struck. Seven years later, he starred in one of the most famous films of his career, The Sound of Music, as Captain Von Trapp alongside Julie Andrews. "The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend," she said in a statement. "I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humor and fun we shared through the years. My heart and condolences go out to his lovely wife Elaine, and his daughter Amanda."

In a career that ultimately spanned nearly seven decades, Plummer acted in upwards of 200 films, television shows and plays, including his Oscar-nominated performances in The Last StationAll the Money in the World, and Beginners, for which he won his first and only Academy Award in 2012. Plummer's accolades also included two Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, one Golden Globe Award, one BAFTA Award and one SAG Award. 

He had most recently garnered critical acclaim for his 2017 role as J. Paul Getty in All the Money in the World, for which he became the oldest Academy Award acting nominee at 88 years old after replacing Kevin Spacey

In addition to his on-screen work, Plummer was also a notable voice actor, having narrated and voiced characters for dozens of films and TV shows. Among them was Charles F. Muntz, the villain of Disney and Pixar's Up.

Plummer worked up until his final days, appearing in the 2019 mystery Knives Out, followed by the 2020 war drama, The Last Full Measure, his final film appearance. He was in the process of voicing a character for Heroes of the Golden Masks when he died. 

Behind the scenes, Plummer was married three times, beginning with fellow actress Tammy Grimes, with whom he welcomed his first and only child, Amanda Plummer. He was later married to journalist Patricia Lewis before tying the knot with Taylor. 

Amid the breaking news of his passing, Hollywood is now mourning the loss of a beloved legend. "This is truly heartbreaking," Chris Evans, Plummer's Knives Out co-star, tweeted. "What an unbelievable loss. Few careers have such longevity and impact."
