Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom divorced in 2013, and three years later she's opening up about how it really affected her.
The Australian model covers Elle Canada's December 2016 issue and talks about the split from her husband of three years. Although she's happily engaged to Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel, Kerr wasn't always in a happy place.
"When Orlando and I separated, I actually fell into a really bad depression," she confesses. "I never understood the depth of that feeling or the reality of that because I was naturally a very happy person." What got her through her rock bottom, however, was learning that "every thought you have affects your reality and only you have control of your mind."
Bloom and Kerr share one child together, 5-year-old Flynn Christopher Bloom. Happier than ever, Kerr has learned to balance motherhood and co-parenting with her ex-husband.
"The most important thing is that when he has his time with me, we have quality time together, and when he's with his dad, he has quality time with him," Kerr tells Elle Canada. "And it works out really well because I book in my photo shoots for the time he's with his dad, and the rest of the time I just get to be a mom."
Part of her ease stems from one of her biggest beliefs: the idea of flexibility.
"I have this philosophy that we should all be like willow trees—people think that in a big storm, the oak is the strongest tree, but it's actually the willow tree because it's very, very flexible," Kerr says.
She adds that discovering her self-sufficiency helps her realize how strong she truly is. "What I have found is that everything you need, all of the answers are deep inside of you," she continues. "Sit with yourself, take a few breaths and get close to your spirit."
