Sounds like one beaut of a project.
The Walt Disney Co. has announced plans to give a 3-D makeover to the 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast, for a 2010 release.
According to Variety, the movie's original codirectors, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, will supervise the retooling of the beloved flick—the only cartoon to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. The process should take about nine months.
Beauty and the Beast will join the Mouse House's upcoming 3-D slate led by this weekend's Bolt. Next year's eye-popping releases will include Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie, Pixar's Up and a revamped Toy Story, Jerry Bruckheimer's G-Force and Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey.
No word yet on an exact release date for Beauty. But 2010 will also see Disney unveil 3-D versions of Toy Story 2 and the hugely anticipated Toy Story 3, as well as Rapunzel, Step Up 3 and Tim Burton's update of Alice in Wonderland.
