Johnny Depp Says Actors Who Try to Be Rock Stars Are "Sickening"

Mortdecai star believes they shouldn't try to piggyback on their movies' success

Johnny Depp might have dabbled in performing with The Black Keys, Marilyn Manson and Oasis in the past, but don't expect him to start his own band or go on tour.

At the premiere of his upcoming movie, Mortdecai, in Berlin Sunday, Depp criticized actors who capitalize on their fame to become musicians.

"That whole idea for me is a sickening thing. It's always just made me sick," the 51-year-old Hollywood star said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Even though he has played with famous artists before, he said that he wouldn't try to launch a full-blown music career just because he might have some talent.

"I've been very lucky to play on friends' records and it's still going. Music is still part of my life, but you won't be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won't ever exist," he added.

Mortdecai co-star Gwyneth Paltrow has shown off her musical abilities in Country Strong and Glee. Kevin Bacon, Scarlett Johansson, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Crowe and Robert Downey Jr. are others who have made a name for themselves in the music world, but Depp said that he would prefer to have a low-key music career.

"The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas," the Pirates of the Caribbean star said. "But I hate the idea, 'Come see me play the guitar because you've seen me in 12 movies.'"

"It shouldn't be [that way]," he added. "You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music."

Mortdecai also stars Olivia Munn, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Bettany.
