Watch: Will Jen Aniston and Justin Theroux Work Together Again?

It was inevitable that someone would ask Justin Theroux to comment on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's divorce—and on Monday, it finally happened. Theroux was promoting his new movie, The Girl on the Train, when the Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-stars' breakup was brought up.

Perhaps knowing his statements would be picked apart in the press, Theroux decided to give a restrained and considerate response. "As a child of divorce, all I can say is that's terrible news for those children, and that's all you can really say," the 45-year-old actor told Business Insider. "It's boring to sort of comment on anything else. People are having a bad time. That's horrible."

Jennifer Aniston, who was married to Pitt prior to Theroux, has not commented on her ex-husband's breakup. She and Theroux are used to being in the news, but the latest round of headlines are "nonsense," Theroux said. "There's an endless appetite for trash, apparently, though everyone would say that they don't have that appetite. But I think a lot of people do because people buy it. But there are bigger things to bitch about. It's shocking how much bandwidth things can take up when there are far more important things going on in the world."

One of the more important things Theroux wanted to talk about was The Girl on the Train, in theaters Oct. 7. E! News' Marc Malkin caught up with the actor in New York City Monday, where he admitted Aniston "loved" the rough cut she saw months ago. "She had actually already read the book," Theroux explained, "so she was like, 'What? This is happening? What?'"

Theroux's character is a creep, to be frank, but Aniston knew it was only an act. "The mystery is kind of gone," he said. "She's done a couple movies herself, so she knows what that looks like!"

"All these characters have these dark sides in the movie," Theroux explained to E! News. "You know, there's definitely no saints in this film—some less saintly than others. But it is a fiction."
