NFL prospect Michael Sam made history Saturday as the first openly gay player drafted by a team in the National Football League.

The former Missouri defensive end was selected by the St. Louis Rams as the 249th pick overall in the 2014 NFL draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Moments after the announcement, Sam, 24, took to Twitter writing, "Thank you to the St. Louis Rams and the whole city of St. Louis. I'm using every once of this to achieve greatness!!"

Several people also tweeted a picture of him celebrating by kissing his boyfriend on live television.

Sam came out publicly in February.
