According to the Hollywood Reporter, Twilight's broodiest vampire has entered into early talks to trade in his would-be fangs in favor of the slightly more realistic—but just as potentially dreamy—drama Memoirs.
The film centers on two new lovers whose burgeoning relationship is threatened when they each must deal with family tragedies.
Joining Pattinson in today's action-packed casting roundup is fellow teen dream Zac Efron, along with Jon Hamm, Freida Pinto, Tom Hanks and Vanessa Redgrave, while Dennis Quaid and Julianne Moore are teaming up to show their primary colors, starring as Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Now that's politics in action.
First up, the Pattz-approved Memoirs. Rachel Getting Married writer Jenny Lumet is on board to give the script a final once-over.
Adding to the likelihood that the project will quickly become Pattinson's official next swoon-worthy vehicle, the film is being produced by Summit Entertainment, the same company that assembled Twilight and the now-shooting New Moon.
There's no word on a possible start date for the project, though Pattinson is currently reprising his role as—as if you had to ask—Edward Cullen in the second installment of the Stephenie Meyer franchise.
In other notable casting news:
• Efron is getting a new lease on Life, entering into talks to reteam with his 17 Again director Burr Steers on the big-screen adaptation of The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. Per Variety, the film centers on a cemetery caretaker who somehow meets weekly with his deceased younger brother and who blames himself for his sibling's accidental death. Production is slated to begin in July.
• Quaid, Moore and Michael Sheen are getting politically active with their next project, with the trio signing on to star as President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair—Sheen's third outing as the politico—respectively. Per Variety, the trio will join forces for The Special Relationship, an HBO film chronicling relations between the U.S. and U.K. heavyweights during their time in office. Peter Morgan, a frequent collaborator of Sheen's as the writer of Frost/Nixon, The Queen and The Deal, penned the screenplay and is expected to make his directing debut on the project.
• Despite the recent and tragic loss of her daughter, Vanessa Redgrave is returning to some semblance of normalcy, signing on to star opposite Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett in Ridley Scott's as yet untitled Robin Hood flick. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Redgrave will play Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, the mother of King John.
• Slumdog Millionaire's breakout beauty Freida Pinto has joined the cast of Julian Schnabel's Miral, centering, per Variety, on a woman who founded an orphanage in Jerusalem shortly after the creation of the Israeli state. Shooting starts in April.
• Hanks is getting ready to tell a different kind of toy story, signing on to star in Major Matt Mason, a live-action feature based on the vintage Mattel doll action figure. Per Variety, the toys first surfaced in 1966 and followed an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. No start date has been set.
• Nothing mad about it: Jon Hamm is set to ham it up for Howl, an indie flick centering on the obscenity trial for Allen Ginsberg's poem of the same name. Per Variety, the Mad Man will star as defense attorney Jake Ehrlich, who, as showbiz incestuousness would have it, was the inspiration for Perry Mason. James Franco, Mary-Louise Parker and David Strathairn also star.
• Melrose Place just got two more residents: All My Children alum Colin Egglesfield and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Stephanie Jacobsen are the latest thesps to board the CW remake, starring as (hot) sous-chef Auggie and (hot) UCLA med student turned call girl Lauren, respectively.
• Scott Caan is copping to Cop House. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the second-generation thesp will lead the cast of Brett Ratner's new Fox comedy pilot, set at a halfway house for troubled officers. Caan plays a cop who suffers a nervous breakdown when his wife leaves him for his sister. Comedy gold.
• Michelle Trachtenberg is showing no Mercy, signing on, per the Hollywood Reporter, in the NBC drama pilot centering on the friendship of three nurses.
