Endearing outcast John Cusack and Brit babe Kate Beckinsale may be adorning the posters for Serendipity, but it's the fringe characters that often give this whimsical, supersappy romantic comedy its charm. The two--dedicated to others--meet by chance on one wonderful New York night and let fate decide if they should meet again to continue their attraction.
Years later--guess what?--they do, in heart-tugging perfection, as Cusack reminds us why we fell for him in Say Anything... and Beckinsale, well, looks really hot. Actually, it could be any mix of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal and Tom Hanks running this blinding array of extraordinary happenstance. So, what makes Serendipity rise above is Eugene Levy's demented department-store salesperson, Jeremy Piven as Cusack's obituary-writing buddy and Northern Exposure's John Corbett as Beckinsale's self-absorbed musician fiancé. Worth a chance.
