Basically a big, lovable, tree-uprooting puppy, the simian star of this crowd-pleasing Disney remake will win over the younger viewers, while humanoid leads Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron should add some appeal for the grown-ups. Though Joe's been raised from chimphood by the semi-wild, never-been-in-love Theron, evil poachers and crass animal-shelter moguls force him to leave his natural habitat and settle for a less-than-palatial spread in L.
A. Thankfully, the big guy still enjoys a good game of hide-and-seek, so audiences will enjoy his romps through Hollywood landmarks like the famous Chinese theater. The film is respectful of the satisfying original, but the modern digital wizardry better animates and inserts Joe into the action. Though serious and scary in parts, Mighty Joe Young is good, escapist family adventure.
