How did so many talented people get lost in this Jungle? John Leguizamo stars as a mentally challenged man living with his social activist mom, Julie Carmen, and her lover, Rosie Perez. When mom is murdered by a neighborhood thug, Leguizamo roams the New York streets, contemplating revenge with a friend's gun. Oh, and then there's Leguizamo's berating dad (Cliff Gorman) and Marisa "blink-and-you-miss-her" Tomei as the caustic cop conducting a murder investigation.
Presumably extensively reedited, this jumbled Jungle meanders with clumsy flashbacks, unexplored characters and relationships and a rushed, unsatisfying conclusion. Plus, director Seth Zvi Rosenfeld lets his accomplished cast turn in unrestrained performances, with everyone doing lots and lots of yelling and hitting--as if that makes for interesting drama. A royal mess.
