CWRachel Bloom is tired, but excited. And understandably so. The star and co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has been going non-stop since the show debuted—"I kind of feel like I've been doing a 31-episode first season in some ways."—and of course she was up early for Golden Globe nominations. She received her second nomination for her work on The CW series, she won last year.
"I was up. I mean, come on, wasn't everyone up? Is anyone really doing the cool thing? I always wonder—No, I was up. I woke up at like 2 a.m. with my heart beating really fast because I drank a lot at the Critics' Choice Awards…I mean, a lot for me is a drink because I can't hold my liquor and I just couldn't get back to sleep," she told E! News in a phone interview after getting her Golden Globe news. "So, I calmed myself down by reading Wired and watching an episode of Frasier. As one does."
For Bloom, this award nomination is a culmination of a whirlwind time in her life. One that saw her star rise even higher after her first Golden Globe win and Netflix started streaming the first season of her critically acclaimed musical dramedy.
"I think that this year I definitely have a level of self-confidence that's really nice. Viola Davis said something really amazing at the Critics' Choice Awards last night, which is, ‘To be a good actor, you have to maintain that idea of imposter syndrome, to always be pushing yourself.' But I will say, only in good ways, some of my imposter syndrome has decreased in that I deserve this and I'm not having to feel like I don't belong somewhere. It was never a negative thing, but there's this kind of starry-eyed walking into a room being like, ‘Whoa, how…?' Like, ‘Oh my god, I'm so little, I'm so small. I'm so insignificant.' So, it feels really, really great."
Coming up for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: guest star Patti Lupone in an episode Bloom calls one of her favorites and the introduction of Scott Michael Foster's character, Nathaniel, "which is a turning point for this season," Bloom said.
"I'm excited for people to see the second half of this story because there are trajectories/arcs that people won't see coming," she said.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has wrapped its second season already. A third season has yet to be ordered, but Bloom is hopeful.
"We feel very supported by The CW, to be honest. I don't want to jinx anything. The last I checked Metacritic…I think we're the most critically acclaimed show on network television. If I'm wrong about that stat, we're one of them. I feel good about it, we're supported," she said. "I also think this Golden Globe nomination really helps. We won the Gotham Award for breakthrough series. I feel good, if it doesn't end up happening—egg on my face, but I feel pretty good about it."
Until then, she has big plans involving lots of TV.
"I'm so behind on television," Bloom admitted. When she was meeting the stars of other nominated shows at the Critics' Choice Awards she said there was only one compliment she could give: "'It sounds great.'"
"It's crazy that a year has passed between now and when I last got nominated for this because it's gone by so quickly," she said. "I'm excited during my break to just be a lazy sloth that I am deep within and just watch all of the television and take so many baths and naps like a cat."
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on The CW. The Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
