Miley Cyrus is overwhelmed by the results of the presidential election.
After Donald Trump was named the 45th President of the United States, Cyrus—a Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporter—filmed a video of herself and later shared it on Twitter.
In a dimly lit room, with tears streaming down her cheeks, the "Liberty Walk" singer told her fans, "So, probably like most people—well, maybe not, because given the result—maybe I really am different and maybe a lot of people that I'm surrounded by think with open minds and open hearts like I do. And I do want to say that I've been very vocal for my support for everyone besides Donald Trump. Heavily supported Bernie. Heavily supported Hillary. And I still think that in her lifetime she deserves to be the first female president, and that's what makes me so sad."
"I just wish that she had that opportunity. because she fought for so long and because I believe her when she says that she loves this country. This is all she's ever done. She's given her life to make it better. But, like Donald Trump so ironically played after his speech, it said, 'You can't always get what you want.' And happy hippies, we adjust and we accept everyone for who they are. And so Donald Trump, I accept you," she said. "And this hurts to say, but I even accept you as the President of the United States, and that's fine...because I think now I want to be hopeful."
Cyrus also thanked President Barack Obama for "everything" he's done in the last eight years.
The Voice mentor ended her video with a message for Trump. "Please, please just treat people with love and treat people with compassion and treat people with respect, and I will do the same for you," she pleaded. "And anyway, anything you ever want to talk about or understand, maybe people that don't think the same way that you and some of the people that support you do, please, if you want to open your mind and open your heart, I would love to give you a key."
"Thank you so much," Cyrus said. "Thank you, Hillary, for inspiring us."
Cyrus championed Sanders in the primaries before Clinton cinched the Democratic nomination. In October, she canvassed for the former Secretary of State in Washington, D.C. and at George Mason University in Virginia. Days later, Cyrus explained why she campaigned for the former Secretary of State during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "You listen to so many people, especially when you're watching the debates—specifically Trump—say so many dumb things," she told the host. "These young kids were so smart. [It was] amazing to talk to them."
Rather than debate "what a horrible guy Trump is," Cyrus said, "It was really about what a great woman she is. And we would choose her no matter what it would be, who she was up against. So, I really think it was incredible to hear the young people say why they're voting for her."
At the time, Cyrus was firmly anti-Trump. "It's terrifying if someone besides Hillary Clinton—we shouldn't even say the name—becomes president," she said. "So, I think she's a total goddess, and I just love her. And I'm really excited to see her for the next four—maybe eight—years."
