When last we saw our hero Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), in the fall-season cliffhanger of USA Network's addictive spy dramedy Burn Notice, he was being blown up.

Now if you've ever watched TV before, you will not be shocked to learn that (being the lead character of the show) Michael survives. So the question for the new batch of episodes premiering tonight becomes (a) who is trying to rub him out and (b) why? If you guessed (a) Tricia Helfer's Carla and (b) because she's sort of a bitch, you would be proven wrong by tonight's premiere. So who is gunning for our spy guy?

I've got the exclusive word from star Jeffrey Donovan himself about the big mystery...

In the eps that launch tonight, we learn that a third party is trying to rub out Carla's network of operatives, Michael among them, and that means that espionage queen Carla and Michael are actually reluctant allies in an investigation for the time being. But that doesn't mean that things stay nicey-nice between them for long.

Donovan whispers to me, "I'll tell you this: What happens between those two [Michael and Carla] is pretty cool, and someone gets shot. One of us gets shot...dead."

As for Michael's other woman, Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), creator Matt Nix (who couldn't be nicer or more cool, BTW) tells me, "In the second half of the season, Michael and Fiona do their best to keep things professional...but find that in their line of work, that's a lot harder than it sounds."

I've gotten a peek at the new season, and I can testify that next week's ep has the best "unprofessional" Michael-Fiona scenes of the series so far. The Proverbs scene actually pales in comparison. (Holler!)

Burn Notice returns tonight at 10 p.m. on USA.
