Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of the greatest actors of his generation. Celebrated for his commitment to his craft, he was a multiple Academy Award nominee who won the coveted Best Actor gong for his title role in Capote in 2006.

But on 2nd February 2014, Hoffman is found dead in his New York apartment. In his left arm is a single syringe. In the apartment forensics find the powerful – and notoriously addictive narcotic – heroin.

On the face of it this would appear an open and shut case - but an examination of Hoffman's chemical makeup will reveal what happened in his final hours, because everything he put in his body – whether he swallowed it, injected it, smoked it or snorted it, leaves a chemical trace.

To find out exactly what killed Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dr Jason Payne-James will study the history of his relationship with drugs and will reveal what finally led to this talented and successful actor's death.
