Calm down, y'all: Miley Cyrus didn't get the wrong planet tattooed on her arm.
The 23-year-old singer debuted her "lil bb Jupiter" ink via Instagram Tuesday, and cosmic craziness immediately broke out in the comments. "This is Saturn," wrote one fan. "I'm surprised she even knew it was a planet," added another.
Some Smilers had more knowledge of space, though, and were quick to jump to defense. "Miley, I love how you decided to show Jupiter with its rings," wrote one. "I have always loved them. And I hated how must people dismissed them, and only spoke of Saturn's rings."
Indeed, Saturn gets most of the glory in the galaxy for being a planet with rings, but Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune all have ring systems, too. According to NASA, Saturn's rings were first spotted in 1610, but Jupiter's faint, less noticeable rings were only discovered in 1979. And unlike "the brilliant, icy rings of Saturn, Jupiter's rings are delicate, dusty creatures," NASA notes.
So Miley's Jupiter tattoo having a representative ring isn't wrong—it's accurate, actually, and she's not wrong in choosing for it to represent the fifth planet from the sun rather than the sixth. This Hollywood star might just know more about astronomy than she gets credit for—that, or this was a happy accident. Either way, it's a lovely little reminder not to space out (get it?) and not to snark out (Google it).
