Sally Field, Edie Falco, Brothers & Sisters, The SopranosABC/Michael Desmond, Barry Wetcher/HBO

As the Emmys approach, E! Online's TV Diva (and Live from the Red Carpet cohost) Kristin Veitch keeps rolling out her picks. And now...the most outstanding dramatic actress:

The Incumbent:  Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU

The Contenders

  • Patricia Arquette, Medium
  • Minnie Driver, The Riches
  • Edie Falco, The Sopranos
  • Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
  • Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
  • Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Who Should Win:  Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters

Who Will Win:  Edie Falco, The Sopranos

This year's Best Actress field pits four matriarchs against two career women, and the odds are good a matriarch will take this year's title. Even Mariska Hargitay's show-business pedigree and Kyra Sedgwick's popularity in the Industry aren't enough to beat Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano in her final year of contention.

Falco's probably a lock—Carmela was half Stepford Wife, half Lady Macbeth—though we can't help but root for Sally Field's mesmerizing performance as Nora Walker. What can I say? We like her, we really like her!
