Pretty in Pink celebrates its 30th anniversary this Sunday.
Break out the shoulder pads to celebrate!
The 1986 "Brat Pack" teen movie is about a girl "from the wrong side of the tracks" (Molly Ringwald) who ends up with a preppy guy named Blane (Andrew McCarthy), because of course an '80s romantic lead is named Blane.
The cast is rounded out by Andie's boy BFF "Duckie" (Jon Cryer) and a perfectly smug rich guy named Steff (James Spader.)
The cult favorite comes with so many throwback memories: a perfectly punk soundtrack with performances from bands like The Psychedelic Furs, a love triangle (Team Blane vs. Team Duckie), and oh, the fashion.
Shoulder pads and prints for dayssssss.
Ringwald's looks are so fabulously '80s.
Today, we're choosing to celebrate this romantic comedy-drama with a nostalgic trip back to the wild fashion from three decades ago and what we think these looks mean.
For example, we call this "The Wallflower":
Why? Well, dressed in florals and essentially hiding in a school locker, Ringwald looks like an actual wallflower.
Wait until prom, Molly Ringwald; your time will come!
Up next, we have "The Chilly Librarian":
Oversized glasses? Check. Fuzzy sweater? Check.
A facial expression like you want to "shush" the person next to you? Check.
There's the "Wild About Doilies" look:
That's when you take a decorative mat used for food presentation and wear it around your neck, because why not?
If it looks good on a dessert platter, might as well accessorize with it.
Another favorite is the "9 to 5":
Ringwald may be playing a high school senior in Pretty in Pink, but this blazer/trench coat thing screams '80s office chic.
Girl means business.
She can also be playful in outfits like "Seriously Guys, I Really Like Flowers":
That's when you drive a point home about prints.
In case you didn't know her character loves flowers, guess what, she has more floral looks.
We'd quote The Devil Wears Prada with "florals? For spring? Ground breaking," but when this movie came out, they still were groundbreaking.
We call this one "In Love With Layers":
Because the 1980s were all about wearing as many things on top of each other as possible.
There's the "Barbie Accessories":
That's when you put everything on your body that you'd put on a doll.
Oh look, I have a hat! And a matching purse. Clip-on earrings, why not? There's even a blazer with a pocket square and match-y buttons.
Don't forget that time she rocked "The Substitute Teacher":
Please tell us the pearls came with the dress.
This look is all about buying one big, matching unit of stuff.
And finally we have "The Sewing 101":
The collar. The lace.
When in doubt while embellishing your own outfit in the '80s, always go for busy.
You can never have enough things going on.
One thing we can definitely admire: all things considered, Ringwald's character rocked a ton of trendy looks—and her confidence sold everyone of them.
Now, who wants to lend us some floral leggings for a throwback party?
