Christian Bale may be an A-lister who knows what's what in Hollywood, but it turns out even he makes some (big and hilarious) mistakes from time to time. The actor, who stars in Terrence Malick's new movie Knight of Cups, revealed during an interview with Evening Standard that he accidentally mistook his co-star for an actual stripper while shooting a scene.
"We were filming in a strip club, and Teresa Palmer's there in her little silver hotpants and I'm asking her how long she'd been dancing for? Does she enjoy it? What got her into it? I had no idea that she was an actress until about a week after working with her. Suddenly I saw a billboard with her face on it and I went ‘What?'"
LOL! Honest mistake? (And good questions, Christian.) Hey, if anything, it only praises Palmer's acting skills.
Plus, you can't really blame Bale, because Malick's directing style was pretty abstract (to say the least).
The actor portrays a man who experiences an existential crisis after finding fame and fortune in Hollywood, but here's the crazy part—Bale never had a copy of the script. Instead, Malick would just drop the star into different scenes and have him interact with whoever was on set.
Apparently, the other actors knew what was going down, but he didn't. "Everyone else always got more material than I did. Terry called it ‘torpedoing'," Bale explained. "I never got any pages at all. I would just arrive and he would say, ‘Deal with it and see what happens'."
But don't get it twisted. This film isn't about shooting down Hollywood and everything it stands for (or doesn't stand for, if we're keeping it real).
"Hollywood is just a very colorful goldfish bowl in which to set the film," Bale continued. "But I think it applies globally. It's about people with dreams and their desires. Rick feels empty and recognizes that he could keep going on this hamster wheel of wonderful parties and wonderful stories for ever. It's a glamorous life on the outside but from the inside it holds no further interest any more. He's done everything that he could do. Now what?"
Knight of Cups hits theaters March 2016.
