The seven-time Grammy winner just released a touching new song off her latest album, Storyteller, available for release Oct. 23. The emotional ballad, "What I Never Knew I Always Wanted," was written by the country star in collaboration with Brett James and Hillary Lindsey about her 7-month-old son, Isaiah Michael, and husband of five years, NHL star Mike Fisher.
"I never dreamt of my wedding day and the perfect guy," Underwood tells People. "Then I met Mike, and I was like, ‘Wow, so now I know what I was missing.' And the same with my son. I was never like, 'I want kids so bad.' And now that I have Isaiah in my life, I'm like, 'What did I do before?'"
Storyteller is the fifth studio album for the country artist, who got her start winning the fourth season of American Idol in 2005 and will be co-hosting the 2015 CMA Awards for the eighth straight year on Nov. 4.
Though she's sang of life and love before, this is Underwood's most touching album yet as it hits closest to home when she sings about her baby and husband.
The 32-year-old mom says she "kind of tried to stay away from" writing about baby Isaiah, but "it just kind of happened one day." Underwood says it's impossible to not let her life affect her music.
The Oklahoma native has had quite the year prepping for her new album's release while also balancing the joys and fears of motherhood.
"You feel guilty about every single thing, every decision you make, everything you do," the artists also told People in her candid interview about the self-doubt new parents feel when welcoming their firstborn child.
Even while balancing her hectic schedule, Carrie never ceases to amaze us with her music. This beautiful new song definitely tugged at our heartstrings as she sings about the two most important men in her life.
