Well that was…not what we were expecting.
If we had bet any money on the winners of tonight's Critics' Choice Awards, we would be pretty upset right now, because some of those winners really threw us for a loop in some good ways and some sad ways.
HBO's Silicon Valley took home the top prize for comedy, while the CW darling Jane the Virgin walked away with a whole lot of unfortunate nothing. Transparent's Jeffrey Tambor was named best actor in a comedy, and current Queen of Everything Amy Schumer was named the best actress in a comedy. Unfortunately, we were denied a hilarious acceptance speech from Schumer due to the fact that she was in New York being worshipped by everyone accepting a Peabody Award. (Guess we'll just have to settle for watching this clip of her bashing a Bachelorette contestant a few thousand more times.)
On the drama side, The Americans took home the top prize as the best drama, while Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk was awarded as the best actor in a drama. The moment that had us screaming, however (aside from Chelsea Peretti and Terry Crews' hilariously awkward attempt at presenting) was when Taraji P. Henson, won the award for best actress in a drama for her role on Empire, proving what we all already knew: Cookie Lyon is unstoppable, and incomparable.
