Please excuse our appearance this morning: Our eyes are bloodshot and puffy, our noses are stuffy, and our hair is a mess. But hey, that's what happens when you spend all night crying!

When news broke last night about Nina Dobrev's upcoming departure from The Vampire Diaries, it totally destroyed us. We feel like we just found out our BFF was moving far, far away. Sure, we'll still be able to "keep in touch" with her as she moves on to other projects in the future, and we'll always have Netflix to binge watch old seasons of TVD, but it will never be the same. Plus, the show in general is going to look so different without Elena Gilbert, the girl who started it all. We are willing to give an Elena-less TVD a chance, but dang, this news still hurts!

We know TVD as a whole is going to be able to survive the departure of Dobrev (and Michael Trevino too!), but that still didn't stop us—and TVD fans around the world—from spending the night in tears, shock, anger and total devastation. In fact, "Elena is the soul of TVD" trended on Twitter worldwide almost immediately after her announcement.

Check out these fans who are totally feeling our pain:

Of course, some fans were optimistic about the future of the show despite it losing its star. We have a lot to learn from these wise, wise people:

We may not be ready to say goodbye to Elena Gilbert (and Dobrev) yet, but we can't wait to see where her career takes her next, and we wish her all the best.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
