Long before Katy Perry rode in on her mechanical lion and ushered in Missy Elliott's return, the biggest names in music joined forces for the Super Bowl XXXV Halftime Show in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 28, 2001. Aerosmith headlined the event, performing "Jaded" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." The rock group also recruited Mary J. Blige, Nelly, Britney Spears and 'N Sync to close the set with "Walk This Way."
Spears and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake performed their verses together, while Nelly added a rap.
(Fun fact: Nelly and Timberlake also performed with Janet Jackson during Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.)
Spears made an appearance in the NFL's commercial for Super Bowl XLIX, "Together We Make Football." In the 10-second teaser, the Louisiana native applied New Orleans Saints eye black. (Spears may be loyal to her home team, but did she root for the New England Patriots or the Seattle Seahawks?! People need answers.)
As it turns out, Spears was actually at the game in Arizona with boyfriend Charlie Ebersol. While there, she bumped into an old friend—Tyler! Spears, 33, snapped a photo with the rock legend and shared it on Instagram, writing, "Just ran into this guy @iamstevent #SuperBowl #reunited #2001halftimeshow."
The former American Idol judge, 66, shared another picture with Spears via his own Instagram account and quoted a "Walk This Way" lyric in the caption. "JUST GIMME A KISS…BRIT... @BRITNEYSPEARS," the "Dude Looks Like a Lady" rocker wrote, adding, "#2001HALFTIMESHOW #WALKTHISWAY #REUNITED."
