Jake Gyllenhaal and Margot Robbie are testing new waters—literally!

The beautiful Australian actress graces the cover of W's December/January issue, while the handsome Nigthcrawler actor covers the December 2014 Art issue—and both photo shoots were done under water! Photographer and video artist Bill Viola, who is known for using water in his work, snapped both stars submerged in a tank in his Long Beach, Calif., studio.

Robbie revealed in her interview that she prepared ahead of time for the wet photo op.

"I've been practicing in my bathtub," the 24-year-old admitted. "I'm so excited. I've been holding my breath to see how long I can go without turning blue."

The Wolf of Wall Street actress, who stars opposite Will Smith in next year's Focus, divulged that her main goal for the shoot was "to project serenity. I am pretending that I'm lying at the bottom of a stream in a peaceful state," she said.

She certainly succeeded! The blond beauty is effortlessly stunning as she calmly floats in an embellished Donna Karan New York dress.

A self-professed "water baby," the Z for Zachariah star also shared how much she loved swimming in her family's pool growing up on the Gold Coast. "My mom could not get me out—she'd put my dinner plate at the end of the pool, and I'd eat my meals in the water."

Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal's experience with the underwater photo shoot was the complete opposite of serene and peaceful!

"I didn't expect the sensations—the water would go up my nose and out my eyes, which made it difficult to keep my eyes open," the 33-year-old Nailed actor confessed.

"There's a panic that sets in, because you're running out of breath," he continued. "And even though you can hear [people] talking, telling you to move your arm or open your eyes, mostly you're in your own head. You feel very alone."

Despite his not-so-wild time in the water, the Prisoners star is still sexy soaking wet in his all-black Boss ensemble!
