If this isn't a back-handed compliment, we don't know what is.

Steve Carell stopped by The Daily Show to promote his upcoming flick, Foxcatcher, when Jon Stewart decided to call him out on his shocking dramatic role.

"I go to see the movie Foxcatcher. It's a brilliant movie. It's a wonderful movie. The performances are incredible—you're not in it," the host joked. "I know you. You're not in this movie."

And fine, truth be told Carell's appearance is dramatically different for his role as James du Pont, but his voice gives it away in an instant! (Not to mention that despite the prosthetics and makeup, it still kind of looks like him.)

Stewart asked his longtime pal, "You were here for years, and I never thought you were talented. Why didn't you say anything?!"

Despite the awkward question, he ended the candid interview with one very, very flattering prediction for the former The Office star: "Oscar the statue, will open his arms and embrace Steve Carell."

And based on the latest reviews, it seems like critics are certainly agreeing with Stewart about Carell's performance.

"Carell dominates with his unexpected performance," The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

"Playing a young man who doesn't have a clue how to articulate his feelings and suffers for it, Tatum is a smoldering, festering piece of emotional raw meat, able to be manipulated this way and that by his benefactor. You feel his pain."

Meanwhile, Variety proclaimed that Carell's acting "anchored" the Bennett Miller-directed flick.
