Did you think we were going to let a week go by without talking about Frozen? Ha! You silly humans. But seriously, these pictures are really cool because it shows what Disney's mega-hit would have looked like if it were drawn in the same vein as Aladdin and The Lion King.
While Frozen was still in development, it was tentatively titled Anna and the Snow Queen and it was supposed to be animated like the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog. The studio hoped that The Princess and the Frog would usher in a new era of Disney animation that would bring back the hand-drawn worlds featured in Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and so on.
Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office (for Disney standards), and Frozen's animation game plan was changed to look like their last big hit, Tangled.
That move obviously paid off, because Frozen is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time and they are approximately 99 million viral videos featuring "Let It Go."
But some of the concepts from the original Frozen animation art are floating around, and Disney virtual development artist Cory Loftis was kind enough to post them to his Tumblr.
It looks like most of the art is from the "Love Is an Open Door" duet between Anna (Kristen Bell) and Hans (Santino Fontana), but there are also drawings of the snow beast and of the wolves scene with Anna and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff).
Beautiful, right? Now answer us this: do you think Frozen would have been as successful if it were drawn like this, or were they right to do computer animation?
