Despite a big win in the Democratic primary, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, older sister to Stephen Colbert, lost out today to scandal-tinged former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford in what was her first time running for political office.
She would have been the first Democrat to represent South Carolina's 1st congressional district in 30 years.
Meanwhile, Sanford—who resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2009 after being caught in an elaborate cheating scandal that turned the Appalachian Trail into a perennial late-night talk show punchline—remains undefeated in three congressional and two gubernatorial races.
Stephen Colbert had hit the campaign trail for his sis (but only from his perch as host of The Colbert Report if something funny happened), hosting fundraisers for her in their hometown of Charleston and two last month in New York and Washington, D.C.
"She's my sister, and I'm willing to, you know, break the jewel of my own creation to try to do something for her," he told CNN in March. "I'm not worried what it would do to me or my show to try to help her as myself, not as my character, and to help her as myself."
