After Showtime officially announced that Dexter's upcoming eighth season would be its last, rumors of a potential spin-off series centering on Dexter's fan-favorite sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) began to surface. Now network boss David Nevins is addressing the chatter, and we think longtime fans of the series will very much like what he has to say.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nevins says he "won't rule it out!" But there's a catch...
When asked about the potential for a Deb-centric series, Nevins explains, "All options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There's nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won't rule it out, but I'm not actively planning anything."
Speaking to what fans can expect from the upcoming final season, which premieres in June, Nevins says the show will "change its formula."
"The consequences are already starting to hit him. It's jeopardized his most important relationship on earth, which is with his sister; his other relationships on the show will be touched this year, and he's still changing," Nevins explains of the series' antihero Dexter. "Here's a lot of different things in play. Part of what you need to do in a finale is start bringing some of the different threads together: his sister, his son, his love life, his professional life and his childhood trauma."
Dexter's final season premieres Sunday, June 30, at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
