It's molting season here in Los Angeles, when Hollywood animals shed their summer skins and grow new ones for fall. For Nicole Richie, we're being literal.

Take a nice, close look at the Mathieu Mirano gown she wore to the ALMA Awards in Pasadena on Sunday. We're not sure if those black and gold pin feathers are filling in or falling out, but whatever halfway stage we're seeing, it's a heck of a dress.

Mrs. Joel Madden paired the daring gown with a raccoon-inspired eye (why stick to one species when you can channel two?), plus YSL shoes, Meus jewels and a clutch from her own House of Harlow collection.

Richie's been modeling much of her own collection lately, maybe hoping to compete with all the other labels debuting new lines this week. One of our fave pieces was a pair of shoes Richie wore to the DuJour mag party a few days ago, which happened to have a snakeskin print and a snake winding up the heel.

Do we sense a bestial theme here?

And what do you think of Richie's look: Gotta Have It or Make It Stop?
