Tim Burton-Johnny Depp tea party gets off to whopping $116.3 million start, per estimates

"It was bonkers."

That's how a Disney exec today described Alice in Wonderland's estimated and stunning $116.3 million box-office debut.

The 3D-powered Tim Burton and Johnny Depp tea party blew away big expectations, sucked the life (and screens) from Avatar, and became Hollywood's first $100 million-plus opener outside of the summer and holiday seasons. Like Disney's Chuck Viane said, borrowing a word from his studio's film, "bonkers."
