With all the questions about who he is, it's been unfortunately easy to overlook what Simon Monjack is going through.

"My world was destroyed yesterday," the widowed British screenwriter told Access Hollywood Monday, making his first comments about wife Brittany Murphy's sudden death Sunday morning.

Monjack said that it started off as a "regular day" turned tragically irregular when Murphy's mom, Sharon, went into the bathroom to check on her daughter, whom she felt had been in there a long time.

"Her mom screamed for me and I ran, then called 911," Monjack recalled.

Paramedics got to the Hollywood Hills home the couple shared at 8 a.m. Efforts to resuscitate Murphy proved futile and she was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. after being transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The L.A. County Coroner's Office is holding off on releasing its autopsy report pending the results of toxicology tests, but chief investigator Ed Winter said today that prescription medications were confiscated from the actress' home, and that authorities were told Murphy had been experiencing flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to her death at age 32.

Murphy had seen a doctor recently, Monjack said.

"She had laryngitis," he said. "She had been tired at the end of the year. She had made a couple movies."

Saying that he appreciated the outpouring of support from Murphy's fellow thesps over the past 24 hours, Monjack said that the sentiment from his wife's ex, Ashton Kutcher, struck him in particular.

"I loved what Ashton wrote on Twitter," he said. "It was comforting to me. I couldn't have said it better."
