Dylan McDermott is aiming for a very specific TV hat trick.
The actor currently stars as special agent Remy Scott on CBS' FBI: Most Wanted, one of the latest entries in the Dick Wolf television universe.
And before that, McDermott starred on the first two seasons of Law & Order: Organized Crime, another one of Wolf's creations.
When asked if he'd ever consider returning to the L&O world to join his former Practice co-star Camryn Manheim, who is currently starring on the flagship series, not only was McDermott interested—he went one step further.
"I would love that," he exclusively told E! News. "I would love to combine the entire universe of Dick Wolf. I've done the Law & Orders, I can do definitely do that again. I could show up on all the Chicagos!"
If McDermott is determined to head to the Windy City, he has a few options. Wolf is the executive producer of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med—which all currently air on NBC.
As for his current gig on FBI: Most Wanted, the Feb. 14 episode of the CBS drama finds McDermott's character going undercover as a priest to take down a pastor and his brother who have kidnapped two teenagers in order to mutilate them into a horrific beast (think The Book of Revelation).
For McDermott, it provided an enticing chance to dig deep and insert agent Scott into a more sinister world than ever before—one that has echoes of McDermott's work in the American Horror Story franchise.
"Any role, you have to bring yourself into it," McDermott said. "Otherwise, it's no good. You don't have a feeling for it, you're not connected to it. And people know that. This crime world—like I did on Organized Crime, like I did on American Horror Story—this is a world that I understand. When you understand something, you can play it. When you don't understand something, that's when you get in trouble."
McDermott felt especially connected to his character going undercover as a priest because of his own personal background.
"It's sort of intrinsic in many ways," McDermott explained, "because I had been raised in the Catholic faith and went to Catholic schools and been around many priests and Jesuits. I don't think I had to do much other than to tap into it because it was there, and that's what you want. You don't want to have to do a ton of research because it's just part of you."
McDermott continued, "As soon as I put on that priest's collar and uniform, if you will, I just was this guy."
