In order to play onscreen BFFs, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher had to become BFFs in real life.

The rom-com veterans shared the unique way they prepared for their new Netflix movie Your Place or Mine exclusively on the Feb. 7 episode of E! News. And it turns out, their kids even joined in on the fun.

"I actually sent him a video, and I said, 'Hey, what do you think about sending a video to each other every day for like 30 seconds, a minute, about a little bit about ourselves?'" Reese explained. "Like, 'Who's your best friend? What's your mom and dad's name?' Stuff like that."

And according to Ashton, the Oscar winner wasted no time getting to know him. "And then Reese, the next day, 'Hey friend! I'm down here. Listen, I'm hanging out with my mom and we're on the porch and we're doing this,'" he joked. "And I was like, 'Oh, this is happening. This is happening right now.'"

During these daily messages, Reese revealed that her kids Ava, 23, and Deacon, 19—whose dad is her ex Ryan Phillippe—as well as Tennessee, 10, he youngest with husband Jim Toth, weren't afraid to poke fun at Ashton's football preferences. She told E! News, "My kids even got on there and started giving him crap about his football team."

"That spiraled," Ashton, who roots for the Chicago Bears, hilariously responded. "And then they won. My team lost to their team."

In Your Place or Mine, the two star as longtime friends Peter and Debbie. And upon swapping houses with each other for a week, they begin to discover that their relationship might be deeper than just friendship.

Much like her single mother character, Reese admitted that she had nerves when first becoming a parent. "I had kids when I was 23," the 46-year-old shared, "so I think I always worried, 'Am I doing this right? Am I messed up? Did I do it right?' But now, I feel more confident—I've been doing it for 23 years—that I probably got some stuff right."

As for the biggest thing self-proclaimed "jungle gym dad" Ashton has learned parenting kids Wyatt, 8, and Dimitri, 6, with his wife Mila Kunis?

"I don't think it's my job to make happy kids," he stated. "I think it's my job to make resilient kids."
