Harry & Meghan director Liz Garbus is taking a stand against the crown.

The documentary filmmaker recently criticized Buckingham Palace over its alleged conduct regarding the Netflix series which detailed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's rifts with royalty, as told by the couple.

"Buckingham Palace said that we didn't reach out for comment [on the docuseries] when we did," Garbus told Vanity Fair. "They did that to discredit us…and by discrediting us, they can discredit the content of the show.… We lived through some of those moments that were a little bit like Alice Through the Looking Glass." Buckingham Palace declined to comment on Garbus' remarks.

In December, ahead of the show's release, a Netflix source told E! News that communications teams for King Charles III and Prince William's teams were contacted for comment. However, a senior royal source told NBC News that the palace was not asked for comment.

Moreover, Garbus defended the show, pointing out what she claimed were double standards.

"People are very happy to read everything about Harry and Meghan when it's somebody else writing about them," she said. "But when Harry and Meghan want to tell their story in their own words, it suddenly becomes an issue."

Garbus said that no one is being "forced to watch a documentary," noting that the Duke and Duchess have a right to tell their own version of the narrative. (A month after the show's premiere, Harry released his bombshell memoir, Spare.)

"There have been more documentaries and books written about Harry and Meghan than Harry and Meghan have produced themselves," she continued. "So I think it's an interesting kind of pearl-clutching that doesn't quite add up with the public's appetite for reading stuff about them from other people."

Harry & Meghan chronicled the pair's love story since meeting in 2016, as well as the tensions that led to them stepping down as senior members of the royal family in 2020. Harry alleged in the series that giving up their titles created a "wedge" between him and William, recalling that "it was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me" because of the decision.

On Meghan's behalf, the Duchess got candid in the series about mental health struggles, as well as her July 2020 miscarriage. As for why she wanted to share her story publicly, the Suits alum said she wanted others to know "it's okay to talk about" these vulnerable moments.

"I could make the choice to never talk about those things," she shared in the series, "or I could make the choice to say, 'With all the bad that comes with this, the good is being ale to help other people.' That is the point of life: Connection and community like that."
