America's favorite fat fighter, Richard Simmons says he's going to medical school. The 48-year-old told USA Today Wednesday that he intends to become a general practitioner and help combat the obesity epidemic. "Chicago Hope and ER had nothing to do with it," he said.

While his publicist confirmed that Simmons was going back to school, Simmons himself was unavailable for comment today because he's out plugging his new cookbook, Farewell to Fat.

Simmons already has a bachelor's degree and has begun boning up on anatomy. He has narrowed his choices to three universities that will accommodate his busy schedule. He wants to begin taking pre-med courses in January.

With a busy slate of speaking engagements, talk show appearances and other self-promotion, no telling how long it will be before Simmons is "Operatin' to the Oldies."

"I'm still teaching. I'm still writing another book. I'm still going to shopping malls. I'm still calling 50 people a day. But I want to be a doctor, and I think I can help," the fitness guru says.

Besides, he adds, "I look good in white."
