I just caught the new Toronto cast in Dirty Dancing at The Royal Alexander Theatre. The musical adaptation of the film is a must-see for anyone who enjoys theatre or can’t get enough of the original film. The production really succeeded at reproducing the movie in a stage production – the sets and lighting were awesome!

It was the cast's second day performing and it was obvious with the energy rumination around the theatre. The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the night was catching Melissa O’Neil (second winner of Canadian Idol) in the musical. Her solos were absolutely breathtaking. The play uses postmodernism, mixing a 60s wardrobe with an 80s sensibility and a little bit of contemporary tongue-in-cheek humour. Though Baby’s character (Ashley Leggat, Confessions of a Teen Drama Queen and Life With Derek) was a little too swoony for me, but she was definitely a Baby lookalike and did well when she wasn’t making moon eyes.

Jake Simons was smouldering as Johnny, working his dance muscles (and showing them to the audience). I think I heard a few ladies in the front whistle - and he was able to stay in character, so kudos to him. He was a bit smarter than the Johnny in the original, as was the musical itself.

All in all, it was a great time and if you loved the movie, you’ll love the musical. Remember the most important thing to take with you: nobody puts Baby in a corner!
