Based on the popular novel, this drama is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with a girl-power punch of Thelma and Louise. Ryder plays a '60s high school grad who attempts suicide and ends up in a well-to-do loony bin. She takes her meds, deals with her inner demons and bonds with her ward mates. Goldberg patrols the halls as a sensitive nurse, but the film belongs to Jolie as a rebellious sociopath who takes Ryder on a few "nutty" excursions.
Despite some heavy-handed moments in the 11th hour, the film is emotional and mesmerizing.
