Martin and Murphy team up for the first time--with mixed results--in this tale of guerrilla filmmakers hoping to score big. Martin plays Bowfinger, a director-producer hack whose anemic oeuvre makes the films of Ed Wood seem Bergmanesque. Nonetheless, he'll get the green light for Chubby Rain, his new action script--if he can just convince Murphy's egomaniacal superstar Kit Ramsey to appear.
Murphy blends pathos and humor as Kit's nerdy twin brother, Jiff--a bonkers brew of TV's Steve Urkel and Jerry Lewis. The Kit/Jiff yin-yang is a dandy platform that harks back to Murphy's character-sketch glory days on SNL. Martin, who wrote the screenplay, gives Murphy the creative space to strut his stuff.
