She'll weave you a banner. She'll cook you elaborate dishes. Heck, she'll even patiently wait for you in a deadly snowstorm. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's rising star Zhang Ziyi cuts the kung fu and opens her dedicated heart in this passionate and elegant journey about love and understanding. Ziyi's tale of devotion is told through a gorgeously shot flashback, as a son carries out his father's ancient burial rites in a small Chinese village.
The backstory relies on way too many close-ups of Ziyi running down the road, waiting on the road or walking on the road. But there are plenty of moving moments (i.e., bring some tissues) which ultimately help the son gain touching insights into his parents. And, oh, don't be surprised if you're struck with the overwhelming desire to check in on mom and pop after the film.
