We've gone nearly an entire year without new episodes of Doctor Who, if you can believe it. But worry no more—the Doctor is back with a brand new Christmas Special to tide you over until season 10 begins in April 2017.

In this sneak peek at this year's Christmas Special, called "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," Peter Capaldi's twelfth doctor teams up with an investigative journalist (played by Charity Wakefield) and a comic-book superhero (played by Justin Chatwin) to save New York from a "deadly alien threat."

"I've always loved superheroes and this Christmas, Doctor Who dives into that world," Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat said in a press release announcing the hourlong special. "My favorite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent."

Said Chatwin in the release, "Working with the amazing people at Doctor Who has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with." The episode will also feature Matt Lucas, Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman.

Doctor Who's New Companion Announced: Meet Pearl Mackie!

The 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special, which was written by Moffat, will air on BBC America on Christmas Day.

When the show returns for its regular season in April, theater actress Pearl Mackie will join the cast as the Doctor's newest companion following the exit of Jenna Coleman in 2015. In the official announcement, Mackie described her character, named Bill, as "cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in."

Said Capaldi at the time of the announcement, "It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who. A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she's a refreshing addition to the Tardis and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to the Doctor's adventures."
