Less is not always more

If you're only using your highlighter one way, you're not reaping its full benefits.

Highlighter is a multitasking product that can cover imperfections (like dark circles), enhance your best features (lips and brows) and even bring the drama for a lust-worthy, all-over glow. Ready to learn how to work some highlighter magic of your own? Ulta Beauty Artistic Expert Brittney Ounanian shared a few master tips that will give your makeup look new life this holiday season.

Watch: How to Get the Perfect Highlight Look

When it comes to illuminating, first determine your desired level of glow. For instance, if you want a subtle, all-over shimmer, simply mix a liquid highlighter, like Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, into your everyday moisturizer. "This is great for those days you don't have time to do a complete makeup look," said Brittany.

But highlighter is not just good for a fresh-faced glow. You can use it to play up your favorite features, too. Want to make your brows really pop? "Add a touch of powder highlighter underneath the brow and then above the brow, after filling them in. This will enhance the shape and noticeably lift them," she noted. Or if you're feeling a little tired, add a highlighter pencil to the inner corner of your eyes to look instantly awake, alert and ready for your day.

Are you ready for the advanced version? Go for the ultimate glow by hitting your brows, cheeks, eyes and Cupid 's bow all at once with multiple highlighting products. Or just do one step for a less-is-more vibe.

Step 1: Apply foundation as usual.

Step 2: Dab a liquid highlighter, like Benefit Cosmetics Sun Beam Golden Bronze Complexion Highlighter, at the Cupid's bow.

Step 3: Apply the same highlighter to the bridge and tip of your nose.

Step 4: To emphazie your eyes, use a sheer liquid highlighter, like the one by Becca, to apply a C-shape line around your temples. Pro tip: Use a rounded beauty sponge to lightly bounce and blend the shimmer.

Step 5: Using your fingers, line the inner corner of eyes, also with Becca, to widen.

Step 6: Apply a powdered highlighter, like White Sand from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Ultimate Glow Kit, under your brow, following the shape of your brow bone.

Step 7: After you have filled in your brows, apply a small amount Anastasia's highlighter just above the brow where your arch is most prominent.

Step 8: Using a medium angled brush, apply the same Anastasia powder to your cheek bones.

Step 9: Blend well for an even finish.

Pro Tip: Layer any areas you want to stand out more. Just remember you can be as low-key (or high-key) as you want!
