Be forewarned: The season three premiere of Jane the Virgin is going to make you cry. But that's no spoiler—whether Michael lives or dies has no bearing on the tears that will stream down your face during the emotional episode.

In the season two finale, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) finally walked down the aisle and said "I do" to Michael. But just when they were about to (finally!) consummate their relationship, Michael (Brett Dier) was shot by his partner, who was actually Rose/Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan) in disguise.

The season three premiere will see the entire Villanueva family gathered at the hospital as they await news of Michael's fate—but it won't be an entire hour of stress. The episode will also take a look back at the early days of Jane and Michael's romance.

"It's a heavy episode but I think we managed to get lightness into it," creator Jennie Snyder Urman reveals. "That was the hope—that by going through the past you could put all the stakes in the present and have everybody acting as you would if somebody was in the hospital, but still the show can have the same fun and lightness by going to the past. That was the hope. That you could go there and relax."

But be prepared: you won't find out whether Michael lives or dies immediately. First, we'll meet the other man involved in a love triangle with Jane and Michael—yes, this situation has happened to them before.

"You meet somebody from her past—we learn it's not the first time Jane was in a love triangle and Michael had a little competition for her affections," Urman says.

By the end of the episode, we'll know Michael's fate—and how it will affect everyone on the show. "This event has bigger emotional stakes for everyone. You can see it right away," Urman teases.

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
