Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloë Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Thursday. Four different actors are being honored in two separate categories: Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, Lily Tomlin and Alicia Vikander. Theoretically, only three of the four actors nominated in 2016 can walk away with two awards.
Elba earned a nod in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category for his role in Luther. If he wins, it will prevent Rylance from taking home the award for his role in Wolf Hall (and vice versa). Other contenders include Show Me a Hero's Oscar Isaac, Nightingale's David Oyelowo and Fargo's Patrick Wilson. Elba and Rylance are also being recognized in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category for their roles in Beasts of No Nation and Bridge of Spies, respectively. Love & Mercy's Paul Dano, 99 Homes' Michael Shannon and Creed's Sylvester Stallone are also in the running.
Grace and Frankie's Tomlin earned a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical category, where she'll go up against last year's winner, Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez, in addition to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom, Scream Queens' Jamie Lee Curtis, and Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Tomlin's other nomination is in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical category, where she'll compete with Joy's Jennifer Lawrence, Spy's Melissa McCarthy, Trainwreck's Amy Schumer and The Lady in the Van's Maggie Smith for the coveted prize. Vikander, a first-time nominee, is in contention to win Best Performance by an Actress in Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. The Ex Machina star faces stiff competition from four veteran actresses: Youth's Jane Fonda, The Hateful Eight's Jennifer Jason Leigh, Trumbo's Helen Mirren and Steve Jobs' Kate Winslet. The starlet is also competing with Carol's Cate Blanchett, Room's Brie Larson, Carol's Rooney Mara and Brooklyn's Saoirse Ronan for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Could 2016 be the first year that more than one double nominee wins in both of his or her categories? Only four people have won two acting Golden Globes in the same year: Sigourney Weaver in 1989 (Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Gorillas in the Mist; Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Working Girl); Joan Plowright in 1993 (Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Enchanted April; Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV Film, Stalin); Mirren in 2007 (Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, The Queen; Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film, Elizabeth I); and Winslet in 2009 (Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Revolutionary Road; Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, The Reader).
